Reduce your meat consumption, the planet says YES!

One thing is certain: our food choices leave an imprint on the planet. In this article, we explore the nuances between diet, environmental impact and how at Nossa we reconcile a passion for good food with a commitment to preserving our planet.

Eating habits vs. the planet: deciphering the situation

The impact of our plates

One day, we're being sold the prowess of seed-based diets, and the next, we're being told that in fact... Well. We feel so bombarded with information about the consequences of what we eat that the sight of a plate causes us anxiety attacks!

Are we exaggerating? Yes, but one thing is certain: whatever our eating habits, they have an impact on the environment!

Increase in plant-based food

The rise in plant-based eating in France shows that a growing number of French people are concerned about their eating habits. When it comes to health, we know that eating less meat and more plant-based foods is better for our bodies. Some are also choosing veganism in support of the animal cause.
For most, it's the environment that motivates this choice.
So, at Nossa, we asked ourselves, not without some provocation, if our passion for entrecôte was a concern for the planet.

Rethinking our Food for the Planet

The real problem is intensive farming. For example, industrial livestock farming is a major contributor to the notorious greenhouse effect, accounting for :
  • 53% of nitrous oxide emissions,
  • 44% of global methane emissions.
  • It also uses 83% of agricultural land, much of which comes from deforestation. Not great for the carbon footprint.
  • It's also one of the most water-hungry industrial sectors. To give you an idea: it takes 15,000L of water to produce 1kg of beef.
  • Not to mention cattle feed, often based on soya from deforested land in the Amazon, home of... Acai, of course.
"A vegan diet is probably the best way to reduce your impact on the planet..." Dr Joseph Poore
This quote comes from our very own Dr. Joseph Poore of Oxford University. He has conducted the largest study to date to assess the environmental impact of farmland. Rest assured, you don't have to go totally vegan to make a difference. All you have to do is replace certain animal products with substitutes. For example, instead of drinking cow's milk, you can drink oat milk.
To put things into perspective, it's well known that eating French meat that grazes its pasture in summer and eats hay in winter is not the same thing as eating New Zealand mutton or battery-farmed chicken fed on soy... soy. So meat, yes, but in a reasonable way!

Committed to the Planet: Nossa and the Preservation of Amazonia

At Nossa, our commitment to the planet, and in particular to the Amazon, is at the heart of our mission. We are aware of the environmental challenges posed by certain agricultural practices, notably intensive livestock farming and deforestation to grow soya for animal feed. These activities contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions, the destruction of biodiversity and the degradation of the Amazon ecosystem.
