Reduce your meat consumption, the planet says YES!

One thing is certain: our food choices leave an mark on the planet. In this article, let's unpack the nuances between different diets, their environmental impact and how at Nossa we blend a love of good food with a strong commitment to preserving the Earth.

Eating habits vs. the planet: Let's break it down

The impact of our plates

One day, we're told plant-based diets are miraculous, the next we hear... meh.  Well. We feel so bombarded with information about the impact of what we eat that just looking at a plate can trigger an anxiety attack !

Are we exaggerating? Yes, but one thing is certain: whatever our eating habits, they have an impact on the environment!

Increase in plant-based food

The rise of plant-based eating in France shows that a growing number of French people are concerned about their food habits. From a health perspective, we know that eating less meat and more plant-based foods is better for the body. Some are also choosing veganism to support the animal cause.
For most, it's the environmental impact that motivates this choice.
So, at Nossa, we provocatively asked ourselves if our passion for entrecôte (ribeye steak) was a concern for the planet.

Rethinking our Diet for the Planet

The real issue lies in intensive agriculture. For example, industrial livestock farming plays a major role in the notorious greenhouse effect, accounting for :
  • 53% of global nitrous oxide emissions,
  • 44% of global methane emissions.
  • It also uses 83% of all farmland, much of which comes from deforested areas. Not exactly ideal for our carbon footprint.
  • It's also one of the most water-intensive industries. To put things into perspective: it takes 15,000L of water to produce 1kg of beef.
  • And that's not even counting livestock feed, often based on soy grown on deforested land in the Amazon, home, of course, to acai.
"A vegan diet is probably the single biggest way to reduce your impact on the planet..." Dr Joseph Poore
This quote comes from the brilliant Dr. Joseph Poore of Oxford University. He has conducted the largest study to date assessing the environmental impact of farmland use. But don't worry, you don't have to go fully vegan to make a difference. Just replacing certain animal products with alternatives can already help. For example, instead of drinking cow's milk, you could choose drinking oat milk.
To put things into perspective, it's well known that eating French beef that grazes on pasture in the summer and eats hay in winter is not the same thing as eating New Zealand lamb or factory-farmed chicken fed on ... Amazonian soy. So yes to meat, but in a reasonable way!

Committed to the Planet: Nossa and the Preservation of the Amazon

At Nossa, our commitment to the planet, and especially to the Amazon, is at the core of our mission. We are aware of the environmental challenges linked to certain agricultural practices, especially intensive livestock farming and deforestation to grow soy used in animal feed. These activities are major contributors to greenhouse gas emissions, biodiversity loss and the degradation of the Amazon ecosystem.
